6 STRESS RELIEVERS YOU CAN DO AT YOUR DESK

No matter how successful your business is, there will still be some days when the stress of running things will get to you. If you think that you can’t do anything about it because you don’t have the time to take it easy, then think again. Here are some quick and easy stress-busting exercises and meditation techniques you can do right at your own desk.

1. Deep breathing

Taking a few deep breaths is one of the easiest things you can do to relieve stress, and the best part is that you don’t even have to leave your desk. Plus, it just takes a few minutes of your time, so you can do it even with a loaded schedule.

Deep breathing helps calm the mind because it provides more oxygen to the brain. Try it out whenever a stressful situation pops up in the course of running your business.

2. Body scan meditation

Another thing you can do from the comfort of your own desk, this form of meditation aims to develop mindful awareness to your sensations and eliminate sources of tension. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Remain seated and close your eyes.
  2. Take a few deep breaths.
  3. While breathing deeply, focus your attention to the sensations on your feet and do this for at least one minute.
  4. Shift your focus upward from your feet and do the same thing again for your calves, knees, thighs, core, all the way to your head.

On particularly busy days, you can just choose two or three body parts to focus on. But if you have at least 30 minutes to spare, feel free to do it for your entire body.

3. Stretching

Have you spent the last few hours working in front of your laptop? You need to stretch out. Here’s how:

  1. Start with your arms. Stretch them out in front of you or over your head. find.
  2. Move on to your neck. Tilt it to one side, hold it for a few seconds, then switch sides.
  3. Stretch your legs. Stand up, put a hand on your desk for support, then place one foot on your chair and keep your leg straight. Bend your body toward your leg, hold for a few seconds, then repeat with your other leg.

For maximum relaxation, try taking deep breaths as you do your stretches.

4. Visualisation

When you don’t have the luxury of leaving your office to physically go somewhere to unwind, try visualising it in your mind instead. While everyone will have different visualisations, the important thing is that you think of whatever relaxes you the most.

Turn off your computer monitor for a while, close your eyes, and imagine yourself doing something that makes you happy, like sitting on a blanket by the beach and watching the sunset. Try to feel how you would feel if you were there for real. Think about the smell of the sea, the texture of the sand, and the gentle wind touching your sand. Do this for five minutes, and you’d be surprised at how you relaxed you are after.

5. Snacking

Boost your mood by snacking on scientifically proven stress-busting foods like dark chocolate, bananas, citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, avocados, nuts like pistachios, walnuts, and even chamomile tea.

See, stress-eating doesn’t have to be bad. When done the right and healthy way, stress-eating can be a great way to counter stress. Keep in mind that hunger only exacerbates your stress.

6. Laughing

A lot of people don’t realise it, but laughing is actually an exercise. When you laugh, you work out your core, back, shoulders, and several facial muscles. It’s also good for the soul. So, the next time you’re stressed out, find something to laugh at.

You can watch funny videos on YouTube or exchange jokes and funny stories with your friends. You can even make fun of yourself by looking at your awkward childhood photos. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure it makes you laugh. It will remind you that, although running your own business is a serious matter, you shouldn’t always take life too seriously.
